SEPTEMBER 2003:
MISERY'S AND SEUNG, JELLY MEAT SOUPGully Lounge, Alleluya Cafe, St Kevins Arcade
Karangahape Rd, Auckland, NZOPENING NIGHT PHOTOS:
MISERY'S AND SEUNG, JELLY MEAT SOUP
A strange scent hung over Aucklands Karangahape Road recently, and it wasnt the usual stench of vomit and piss. Aucklands most notorious road for street art and street-walkers had JELLY MEAT SOUP on the menu.
The "Gulley Lounge" in St. Kevins Arcade played host to two of New Zealands most recognised street artists, "Misery" and Seung"! Their show "Jellymeat Soup" featured individual works, as well as collaborative efforts. A Large Crowd overran the arcade and were rewarded with a show of highly unorthodox works. "Misery" stunned her loyal fans with a first time showing of life-size sculptures of dejected looking characters. As well as sculptures, an array of household debris that had been dolled up the only way that Misery can. Briefcases, ironing boards, school desks and picnic sets, amongst some of the bric-a-brac masterpieces on offer. Seung also generated some highly original offerings, such as groaning elephants, wooden giraffes and families made of matchsticks! As well as his artwork, Korean born "Seung" stunned guests by dressing as a giant MATCHSTICK and gyrated his way round delirious art students, musos, punkas and art critics.
This art opening on Karangahape Road brought a much needed reality to the often wanky world of art openings.

AUGUST 2003: THE MAGIC SHOW
ILLICIT BOOTH
August 24-28
LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTRE
LAS VEGAS NEVADA
Back to the Magic show we go.
This time with our new American Licensees "Chaser". We made the drive from L.A to Vegas a couple of days prior to set up the Chaser stand. This year we found ourselves in the licensing section of the show. Every image under the sun seems to be licensed and pictured on everything from ashtrays and keychains to wallets and T-shirts.
Illicit was well placard at the Chaser stand. Rubbing shoulders with Americas favorite artist Coop, Shag and Pusshead.
The stand remained busy for the full 4 days with Coop, Pusshead and Emond signing posters and stickers for eager fans.
It was great to see all of them around the table at once. Not an ego between any of them. As well as the artists Chaser distributes T's for Black Flag, Bad Brains, N.Y Dolls, Ramones and countless other punk rock bands.
As well as the T-shirts Chaser have made Illicit artwork into top quality decals, which will soon be available online and at your local Illicit stockist.

The show kicked off in the early evening and a great crowd showed up for the opening and much thanks goes to Jackie and the staff at Rex, as well as the adjoining bar The Matterhorn! It made for a great night out.
The show was up for the following week and many happy punters were filing past the artworks for the duration of the show.

FEB 2003 : MISERYLAND SHOW 1
10am-5pm, Alleluya Cafe,
St Kevins Arcade Karangahape Rd, Auckland, NZ,
Wow wotta night after 2 months of slaving in my Krd studio show time finally arrived, after a full day of hanging me pix, the crowd started arriving. By 8pm close to 500 people had invaded St Kevins Arcade. Chaos ensued by the way of a nasty Illicit punch of homemade vodka and not much else. People clambered around the merchandise stand as well as the artwork. By 9pm the show was a sellout! Everyone from punx to lawyers seemed to connect with the show. And I had enough bucks to get to Los Angeles.

MARCH 2003 : MISERYLAND SHOW 2
Meltdown gallery, 7522 Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90046, U.S.A,
Onto Los Angeles we go, looking forward to sunshine and swimming pools. However on the day of the Miseryland show it was nothing but Misery rain, rain and more rain the locals had never seen anything like it and neither had we. It didnt stop for the next 24 hours. This didnt stop us from hanging the show, by 8pm a contingency of ex kiwis and local L.A hipsters had arrived to critic my works, among them his alter ego Johnny The Homicidal Maniac who took home a coupla my favorite pieces. The Americans were definitely a little more subdued around the drinks table than our kiwi counterparts!
A lot of thanks has to go to Christine, Paul, Steve and Marty for helping out on the day. As well as our new Yankee pal Randy, It was just such a buzz showing a new audience my work. Thanks again to the Meltdown Crew.
